Ovarian Torsion in Pediatric Patients: A Single-Institution Case Series and Mini-Review of the Literature

Ovarian torsion, also known as adnexal torsion, is an infrequent cause of acute abdominal pain (AAP) in adult women (2.7% of cases of acute gynecologic complaints) which typically affects the ovary and the fallopian tube [1]. In most cases it is caused by a reduced venous return from the ovary, usually consequent to stromal edema, internal hemorrhage or presence of an obstructing mass [1]. However, ovarian torsions represent a rare cause of AAP in children, since the etiology, presentation, diagnosis and management often differ from those in adults [2,3].
